Overview
Thermoskin is a lanolin based liquid sprayed onto sheep after shearing. It reduces the risk of hypothermia and mortality by keeping them warm. Treated sheep also maintain and improve condition compared to untreated sheep. Thermoskin forms a fine environmentally friendly, natural film which covers the sheep and can be applied to all sheep breeds, more successfully on sheep scored 2 and higher. It is basically a weathershield.
When cold, sheep will seek shelter, huddle together and shiver to create body warmth. Cold sheep lose condition because they are not grazing, and profitability can be affected by sheep losses. Six minutes after running through the Thermoskin spray unit the sheep have stopped shivering and can graze comfortably.
Thermoskin can be used directly with solvent based lice treatments NOT WATER BASED. If sheep are exposed to water based treatments (backline), they must be TOTALLY DRY before treating with Thermoskin. It is:
- Protection for sheep that have been shorn traditionally or biologically defleeced
- Physiologically harmless
- Environmentally friendly
- 100% biodegradable and contains all natural ingredients
- Safe and does not damage or affect the wool
- Easily scoured out of wool
Thermoskin Plus is a version of Thermoskin with the addition of UV absorbers to minimise sunburn. These UV ingredients are expensive and make it a much more complex manufacturing process which all adds to the cost of the product. Thermoskin Plus is therefore only made to order.
It can be used on naked sheep, on the ears and rump which are very vulnerable to sunburn. It has also been used when the biological harvesting nets have split and failed, exposing the sheep to sun damage.
